There are plenty of places to locate rocks that are ideal for making accessories. If you live near a moraine, there are likely a lot of interesting rocks and pebbles available. A moraine is an area that was formed by glacial movement. Finding rocks near the beach is easy. As the waves wash onto the sand, they leave behind debris from the ocean floor. This includes shells, sea creatures, fossils, drift wood and pebbles. Many of the rocks and pebbles found on a beach have already been smoothed by the movement of the ocean water. This is good news for crafters who usually take the time to smooth their rocks in a rock tumbler or polishing machine. Much of the work has already been done for you.
If you choose rocks that have not been polished by nature, you will likely need to tumble them yourself. Sometimes pebbles and stones with jagged edges create interesting designs, but most people like to smooth the edges and create a piece they feel is prettier for their accessories. There are machines that polish stones automatically, so all you have to do is add the stones and wait patiently for the process to complete. At the end, you have a collection of lovely, smooth stones.
Those who do not have the patience to create a whole collection of handmade pieces can combine their own work with ready-made items. Combining one handmade accessory of your own with interesting pieces you purchased already made is still a great look. Look for pieces that have a similar theme. For instance, combine accessories with Native American style with other pieces that look similar. If you prefer Asian items, pair those together for a cohesive look. You can also choose pieces in the same color family or featuring the same type of stone. A selection of interesting accessories tie together nicely as long as you combine them based on a particular theme.
